Valentine’s Day Photoshoot + Sessions Announcement!

I’ve been holding onto these Valentine photos since December and I am so excited to be finally sharing them!!! These have to be some of my most favorite self portraits to date. They were so fun and low key to create (I only dressed the top-half of myself, the work-from-home babes know the drill 😂) The whole process from idea conception to completion took less than 24 hours, which is probably a personal record. I am going to tell you about how I’m offering these sessions to YOU for Valentine’s day, so if you’d rather get to that, go ahead and scroll to the end. Otherwise, I love chatting and sharing about my creative process, so you can read on for that!

Screenshot of a text note titled "Vday self portrait" the note reads "kiss marks all over, red lipstick, red corset, mesh gloves, red backdrop, cat eyeliner, red rose, bite roses, eye roll, does he love me, hands under chin, roses in foreground"

This was the note on my phone of the quick brain dump I did the night before — the next morning I was out buying roses.

This was a mid-week photoshoot, and I needed some assistance to get the kiss marks all over my face, so we shot these in the evening after my sister got off work. Luckily, I had planned to do it with 100% artificial light, so it didn’t matter what time of day it was! I’ve been really loving monochromatic photos recently, and I figured this was a good excuse to do some more of that, so I went with the color red in all ways, with some pink low-key eye makeup to tie my hair color in. After a very chaotic lip stamping process 😂 (a bts video will definitely be going up on my instagram of this if it’s not up already) I was ready to shoot. I was doing this totally for myself, so I let myself go with the flow, experiment with weird shit, and played with super close details.

Setting up artificial lights for me is still kind of new, but I’m having fun trying and when I nail it, the result is that much more satisfying! This was photographed with one, big softbox light for any photo nerds out there.

I was really feeling this sassy, sexy, slightly annoyed mood for Valentine’s Day, so I went with that. I didn’t want these photos to be traditional “valentine’s day”, so it needed a little twist. It really helps with pose ideas when I have a concept or emotion that I’m wanting to express. I can think about that emotion, and play into it with my facial expressions and posing, especially with hands and arms for these waist-up photos.

Self portraits are not only an opportunity to experiment during the photoshoot, they also give me a chance to have images to play with in editing, too! Doing things a little differently in post helps me grow as a creative, learn new techniques, and scratches an itch when I’m getting bored with my regular editing routine.

Clearly I’m obsessed with this Valentine photoshoot, so I thought, why not let my Muses in on the fun?! Here’s the details for your very own Vday session:
