April Self Portraits - In the Spotlight

Hey friends! We’re back again with the self portrait project, and it’s a bit of a 2-in-1 (only for blogs, never for shampoo) You might think you missed a February & March self portrait post, however, March was a real busy month so the blog just simply didn’t happen. Balance is hard 😅

So let me take you back to February real quick. Here’s my self portrait from month 2!

a playing card with an image of a woman with blonde hair and a pink tied shirt. There are butterflies all around her, and a butterfly icon where the card suit is.

I’m actually so bummed I didn’t get a chance to write a whole post about this photo, because I’m so so proud of how it turned out! This image is one of my most in depth, ever. There is layering of images, compositing, blending, styling, and creating the card border. Not to mention I shot the photo and edited the entire thing in the same day! When I get excited, I get determined, haha.

I got this self portrait done right at the end of the month, so there was no time to blog it in February, and then March took off like a rocket! Ya girl was booked and busy which is AMAZING, but I tend to let the blog sit on the back burner. Still learning how to balance my workload and energy to be able to maintain my regular projects like the blog and email list, while completing client projects as they come. But don’t get it twisted, I love when client projects take over my work life.

Now I did do a self portrait in March — but I won’t be sharing it in this post. I might not share it in anything. Here’s the sitch:

I had a vision for March’s self portrait. I had the wardrobe, I had the makeup and accessories, I had the pose planned, I had the lighting planned. What I hadn’t really planned was my backdrop. It might sound like no big deal, but I had such a specific vision, that when I threw together a backdrop on the fly, I hated it. It felt cheap and low effort, which is not at all what I was going for. I took my photos anyway, but looking at them afterwards, I decided they weren’t a fully realized vision, so I wouldn’t be sharing them.

I was disappointed that I wouldn’t have anything to share only 3 months into my self portrait project, but ultimately, this project isn’t for anyone else; it’s for me. I still went through with the act of creating, and I’m proud of myself for doing that. I’m also proud of myself for realizing that not everything needs to be shared, because literally no one cares 😂 No one is going to tell on me for not posting my own project.

That brings us up to date, in April! I was excited to try again with a new idea this month, and have fun. I also intentionally set my shoot date to be the day after I got my hair done, and that was probably 80% why I love this month’s set so much!! January & February were single photo months; April simply cannot relate. I started with inspo from Meghan Trainor’s music video for ‘Mother’. Of course, I had an original plan and chucked most of it out the window when I got to the studio (which could be my genius or my downfall, it really just depends on the day.) It was supposed to be pink, super glammy and sassy, and thennnn I found this long sleeve bodysuit in the bottom of my closet. What can I say, it just spoke to me! So I ended up going with this femme fatale, film noir, spy girl vibe. And with my new bangs — I’m OBSESSED. So far, this photoshoot was the most fun for me! I was feeling confident, and just played around with lots of different poses, techniques, and overall just went with the flow of my creativity. Let’s take a look.

Like…I was stunned?? At myself?? It sounds so conceited but if you’ve done a photoshoot for yourself you know what I’m talking about!! I love the vibe, the lighting, the style, I just love it all. So glad I got to use this bodysuit, I’ve literally never worn it before. And I’m so excited for the May self portrait shoot! I have an idea that I’ll need some help with, but I’m really hopeful that it’ll work out…I just need a sunny day. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

P.S. Did you know you can add the spotlight set to your boudoir photoshoot? Yes babe, we can switch up the backdrop color, and give you the bond girl look, or go glam for a burlesque, stage queen!
