How to Plan a Boudoir Photoshoot in 2024

Muse, I’m so proud of you! You’re finally ready to take that brave next step in your self-love journey, and booking a boudoir photoshoot. Deciding to do it at all is the hardest part, but where do you go from there? Take it from a boudoir photographer; I’ll show you everything you need to know to plan your boudoir photoshoot in 2024!

How to Choose a Boudoir Photographer

This is the first and most important step in the entire process, so take as much time as you need here. Choosing a photographer will make or break your session, so you’ll want to do some research. You might already follow a couple people on instagram, or maybe you have no idea and are starting from scratch — either way, you’re going to want to get a good feel for the artists you’re choosing from. I highly recommend starting on google with a quick search. You’ll most likely want to start local, so try something like “Portland boudoir photographer” or “Boudoir photographers near me” and go from there.

When looking through a photographer’s website, I recommend looking through each page! You’ll hopefully be able to get a sense of their voice, their work, and how they might make you feel during your boudoir session. This is the person you’re trusting with your most vulnerable self; if the work is good but the vibes are off, trust your gut and keep looking.

I also highly recommend chatting with your potential photographer over the phone before booking. It’s not necessary, and every person works differently. However, with something like a boudoir session, getting to hear the artist’s voice and getting a sense if you’re going to vibe well together is something you can pick up much easier over the phone. Ultimately, you should choose your photographer based on trust, professionalism, ideals, and their work.

How to Choose Your Boudoir Outfits

Now it’s time to choose your outfits! This can feel really hard, but I like to direct my Muses back to their original vision — what do you want to look like in these photos? How do you want to feel? What is the first image that comes to mind? Take note of these things and keep them in mind when you start shopping.

You probably already have an idea of what colors or silhouettes you like to wear. Shopping can be kind of a pain though, especially online. Sizing can vary from brand to brand, which can result in a lot of frustration. This is exactly why I’ve created the ultimate shopping guide for my Muses to make it a breeze! After booking your session, I send you a big ol’ Welcome PDF that includes the shopping guide with a list of websites and brands to explore, and tips for getting the perfect fit every time without having to try anything on. I got you babe!

A little bonus tip: Don’t forget accessories! A little bit of jewelry bling can give you that extra sparkle to feel really glam.

How to Plan Your Boudoir Poses

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know this is kind of a trick title. With me, you will never ever have to plan ahead for posing. You don’t need to practice, you don’t need to look anything up. The only thing you need to do to prep for posing is to stretch (and I will remind you this several times leading up to your photoshoot!)

I will say, if you have a very specific kind of pose you want to try, you’re more than welcome to bring that to your session! Our time together is collaborative, so if you want to try some experimental posing we can totally do that. Otherwise, you absolutely do not have to go out of your way to learn/research posing. I will guide and direct you throughout your entire photoshoot, helping you pose head to toe, even your facial expressions.
