Maternity Boudoir - Everything You Need to Know

Boudoir is all about celebrating ourselves, our bodies, and our life journey’s in an artistic, intimate way. Of course, all of those aspects are involved in pregnancy, so today we are talking about maternity boudoir! Doing a photoshoot like this to document this fleeting phase of life is so special, and I love creating something unique and beautiful for each and every person. We’re going to talk all about what a maternity session is, what it looks like, what you can wear, and how you can involve your partner if you want to!

What is Maternity Boudoir?

It looks different for everyone. The best part about the Bloom Boudoir experience is that you’ll get to tailor your session uniquely to you. We’ll work with your comfort level, and we can go as spicy or low key as you want! In short, we take elements of a traditional boudoir session, and incorporate posing that highlights your bump. Like I said, you can lean more towards the spicy, sexy side where it’s more “boudoir session and I happen to be pregnant” or more low key and editorial, “my body is museum-worthy artwork and I elegantly have minimal clothing” Does that make sense? I’m really trying to paint this picture for you 😂

Natalie wanted a light, moody, editorial look for her maternity photos. We worked with minimal props, simple wardrobe pieces and light color palette. We came up with some really beautiful, effortless poses to match the vibe.

Abri was inspired by 90s R&B music videos and style for her maternity session. We went with a clean background and let the wardrobe (and the ENERGY between these two) do the heavy lifting. I love when clients come with a fun idea like this and we make it stylized and timeless.

For Brianna’s session, we went a little more into artsy, elegant maternity boudoir. We played with color, nudes, and drapery to celebrate her bump and first step into motherhood.

At Zoe’s maternity boudoir, we went from cozy & light to fine art goddess. I love working with inspiration for each session to give you something beautiful and artistic that you can’t get anywhere else.

What to Wear for Maternity Boudoir

For a lot of people, figuring out what to wear can be the hardest part of prepping for your session. Especially if your partner is going to be involved with you, then you’ll need to make sure you have an idea/color scheme/concept that works for both of you. Some babes like to have solo photos, as well as some with their partner, so there’s opportunity there if you have an outfit you really love, but it doesn’t really work as a couple’s style.

What you’ll want to decide first is how much skin you’re wanting to show for your maternity photos. You can be fully clothed, modestly undressed, lingerie, or fully nude. You can do any combination of these, as we can typically fit 3-4 outfits in a photoshoot! Pinterest is also a great place to go looking for wardrobe ideas, especially for couples. Don’t overthink it too much, if you’re a jeans and t-shirt kind of couple, lean into it! Your photos should be a beautiful, artistic reflection of you, and leaning into your personal style (maybe elevating it a little bit) will ensure that you feel like yourself.

How to Involve Your Partner

If you and your partner want to do some or all photos together, there’s lots of ways we can get beautiful photos of the two of you that still highlight your bump. Like I mentioned before, a lot of mamas want photos of them alone, as so many parts of pregnancy are intimate to you. Depending on your partner’s comfort level, they can hop in for just a couple poses with you and then let you take the stage, or they can share in the full experience with you. If you’d like to have your partner along just for moral support, that works too! Be warned, I will probably put them to work here and there in assisting, a.k.a. tend to your every need haha.

This season of life is so precious, you deserve to feel celebrated, and have photos to cherish forever. Whether you keep them PG or you go full sexy mama, it’s so important to take time to treat yourself and have these tangible memories of pregnancy.
