Modest Boudoir: What to Wear + Pose Ideas!

Everyone has their own idea about what boudoir is and looks like. And guess what? That’s the best part! Boudoir photography is an experience made to empower you, inspire confidence in you, and usually gives you the opportunity to strip down (literally) and feel at home in your body. But thinking that you have to wear exclusively lingerie and bear it all is a very daunting thought for some, and one that doesn’t have to be true if that’s not what speaks to you. You can absolutely get meaningful, sensual, and beautiful photographs with a more modest approach. Your outfits for these photos are purely decorative, because you are the star of this show. In this post, I want to walk you through some wardrobe options that you can layer over lingerie or that don’t involve lingerie at all, as well as some pose ideas that can inspire you without taking you too far out of your comfort zone. Let’s be honest, if you’re doing a boudoir photoshoot you’re ready to get a little bit out of your comfort zone 😉

Modest Boudoir Outfits With Lingerie

Maybe you’re in a place where you do want to incorporate lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot, but not wanting to put everything on display. You never have to explain yourself or your choices, this experience is for and about you. Let’s look at some layering options that will cover you up a little bit, but still letting your lingerie be seen.

Add an oversized sweater or cardigan to your outfit for good top coverage. You can also lift, pull and tug at it for posing, which will let you show as little or much as you want!

A sheer, cutout, or netted dress is a great way to get head to toe coverage, while still letting your lingerie be seen underneath. Try looking at “swimsuit covers” for options!

Robes are perfect for layering with lingerie. They already go with the intimate vibe for boudoir, but also can be worn and posed well for more modest coverage. Go more opaque with a satin robe, or don the sheer Luxe robe at the studio if you’re feeling it!

Tights are an underrated boudoir accessory as it is, but they also make a great layering tool for modest outfits! You can go with as little coverage as fishnets, or more with a more opaque pair.

Modest Boudoir Outfits Without Lingerie

Whether you want to include one outfit sans lingerie, or keep your whole photoshoot lingerie-free, here are some ideas that are sexy & modest.

A classic you may know well - Jeans and a crop tee! Grab your favorite pair of jeans, and a cute crop top or maybe a low cut shirt and work it. You can tug and pull at the jeans if you want to be a little cheeky.

An extension of the previous example, an actual dress can be a very glam look! All it takes is a strap dropped off the shoulder for a bit of mystery.

Boudoir Posing with Modesty

That phrase almost feels like a pairing of complete opposites, but they can totally coexist in your photoshoot. Poses can portray an air of modesty, while maintaining the spirit of boudoir. Here are some pose examples to get you inspired! Additionally, most boudoir poses can be modified to your needs, so when in doubt, chat about your vision with your photographer and see what solutions make sense for you.

Use a blanket or sheet to give you flexible coverage wherever you need it! It’s also so easy to incorporate this trick into a ton of poses, so keep this in mind!

Use your limbs! You can create coverage with your hands by just connecting them to you.

Angling the side of your body to the camera instantly only gives shapes, rather than a full view of anything.

Props are another great tool for covering up while still be aesthetic. This feather fan for example is very sassy and can cover a large area!

I hope this post has given you some ideas, some inspiration, and encouragement to make your boudoir photoshoot representative of you. It doesn’t matter how you celebrate yourself, as long as you’re celebrating at all!
