Vintage Glam Boudoir Photoshoot

I’m back again with my favorite model Muse, the incredible Mikaela (@kaebuffalowings) ! We had this planned since November last year, and after a ton of planning and a common cold reschedule, we finally made it happen in January! Everything worked out the way it needed to, I can’t wait to share a little behind the scenes of how this vintage glam, all black-and-white photoshoot came together.

I love putting together mood boards for creative concept shoots like this. If you’ve had a photoshoot with me, you know that involves a grand mixture of keywords, written ideas, a few Pinterest photos, and some homemade stick figure drawings and sketches of my own. I started with a basic idea and some keywords like “cinematic,” “film-noir",” and “low-key lighting.” I needed to take it a step further and create some kind of story that both Mikaela and I could go off of. Photography is so much more successful and powerful when there’s a story to tell in my opinion, so I came up with one!

We went with the concept of a celebrity model crashing at home after a red-carpet event, and just relaxing with a little rose and lingerie. I knew I wanted to start with a more glammed-up look, so we started with this strappy, sexy dress, and these rhinestone heels and earrings that really sparkled against the dark tones of the outfit and room.

To make this photoshoot a bit more challenging for me (but necessary to get that perfect lighting,) I used a studio strobe light, aka a big ass flash. I was so so nervous about it, but we planned to start the photoshoot after sunset so there was no other light to fall back on. I’m so glad Mikaela believed in me and we went for it because I’m so proud of how these photos came out.

The next phase of the session was the undressing. This was how I wanted to transition from the glam red carpet vibe, to the boudoir look. I love the story telling element this brought to the shoot, and really helps the story flow from beginning to end.

Finally, we arrive at the main event! The lingerie and boudoir part of the photoshoot. I wanted to really switch up the look, so in addition to adding the garter and bra, we switched out the earrings, and pulled Mikaela’s hair up for this more intimate look. This completes our story, and shows off some of the newly added furniture in the studio ;)

It’s crucial for me as an artist to be constantly testing my limits, improving my skills, and putting my creativity to work. This vintage glam boudoir will hold a special place in my journey.
